Darrell Evans committed three errors at third base in one inning, tying the N. L. record for his position and resulting in the Giants losing to the Padres, 5-3. With the Giants leading, 3-2, Ozzie Smith drew a walk to open the seventh. Dave Cash hit a grounder to Evans, who fumbled the ball for one error and then threw wildly, allowing Smith to score the tying run and Cash to reach third. Gene Richards followed with a grounder to Evans, which he again booted, but Cash held third. Dave Winfield then forced Richards at second as Cash scored the run that broke the tie.
