Erupting for four runs in the 12th inning, the Tigers beat the Yankees, 8-4, and eliminated the defending champions from the East division race. Ricky Peters stroked a leadoff single in the Tigers' 12th, Jerry Morales sacrificed Peters to second and was safe himself on an error by first baseman Chris Chambliss.

An infield single by Jason Thompson loaded the bases and Lance Parrish followed with a two-run single. A third run scored when leftfielder Lou Piniella misplayed the ball. A double by Lou Whitaker then capped the outburst. [The Sporting News]
