Carl Yastrzemski collected his 3,000th career hit -- an eighth-inning single -- to highlight a 9-2 victory by the Red Sox over the Yankees. A homer by Jim Rice gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead in the first inning and they added three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth.

Yankee starter Catfish Hunter, making his final career appearance in Fenway Park, received a standing ovation although kayoed in the fifth. Yaz became the 15th player to reach the 3,000-hit plateau and the first American Leaguer to get 3,000 hits and 400 homers. [The Sporting News]
