After waiting for three hours, 42 minutes with a rain delay in the sixth inning, the Pirates finally edged the Giants, 6-5, on a bases-loaded passed ball by San Francisco catcher Mike Sadek. It was the sixth successive setback for the Giants.

The score was 5-5 when Willie Stargell led off the Bucs' eighth with a single. Pinch-runner Alberto Lois advanced to second on an infield out and to third on walks to Bill Madlock and Phil Garner.
