The Yankees smote the Royals hip and thigh, pounding out a 17-4 slaughter. Jim Spencer blasted a three-run homer in the fourth inning and two-run shot in the eighth. Bobby Murcer knocked in four runs with a three-run round-tripper and a bases-loaded walk as every Yankee starter hit safely at least once.

The game was so one-sided that K.C. pilot Whitey Herzog, not wanting to waste relief pitchers, used utility infielder Jerry Terrell to hurl the ninth inning. Terrell retired the side on three pitches. [The Sporting News]
