Lou Piniella drove home the winning run with a single in the seventh inning as the Yankees edged the Twins, 4-3. Pinch-hitter Lenny Randle opened the Yanks' seventh with a single but was forced at second on Fred Stanley's sacrifice attempt.

One out later, Stanley moved to third on a single by Bobby Murcer and scored on Piniella's hit. Ron Guidry, with relief help from Rich Gossage, posted his sixth consecutive victory. [The Sporting News]
