Although George Brett blasted three homers, the Royals needed a run on a single by Willie vWilson in the ninth inning to edge the Rangers, 7-6. Al Cowens opened the ninth with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. After Frank White was intentionally walked and U.L. Washington singled to load the bases, Jim Kern replaced Sparky Lyle on the hill for the Rangers.

Wilson greeted Kern with a single up the middle to plate Cowens, although White was thrown out trying to score on the same hit. Brett drove in five runs with his round-trippers. [The Sporting News]
