After being trounced by the Reds, 12-1, the Cubs came back to win the second game of a doubleheader, 8-4. Dave Concepcion sparked the Reds in the opener, driving in five runs with a single and a grand-slam homer. Junior Kennedy added his first major league round-tripper with a man on base in the ninth. Bill Bonham scattered 10 hits in going the distance for the first time in 17 starts.

A bases-loaded single by Larry Biittner in the sixth inning was the key blow for the Cubs in the second game. The score was 4-4 when the Cubs filled the sacks off Mario Soto on a single by Scot Thompson sandwiched by a pair of walks. After Dave Tomlin replaced Soto, Biittner delivered his hit that produced two runs. The Cubs added a pair in the seventh on a single by Jerry Martin, triple by Steve Dillard and pinch-single by Dave Kingman. [The Sporting News]
