Defensive blunders in the ninth inning handed the Red Sox a 3-2 victory over the A's. The Red Sox trailed, 2-1, when Jim Rice got an infield hit. Carl Yastrzemski hit an apparent double-play bouncer to third but reached safely when nobody covered second base.

The bases became loaded when Bob Watson reached first on an error by shortstop Dave Chalk. Carlton Fisk drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Jim Dwyer, running for Yaz, scored when third baseman Jim Essian threw poorly to home on a grounder by Butch Hobson. [The Sporting News]
