A grand-slam homer by Buddy Bell carried the Rangers to a 7-3 victory over the Royals, who were saddled with their seventh straight loss and 14th in the last 15 games. The Rangers loaded the bases in the second on singles by Pat Putnam and Johnny Grubb and a pass to Mike Jorgensen.

Jim Sundberg singled, driving in one run, before Bell unloaded against Rich Gale for the fifth slam of his career. Jim Kern, who pitched the last three innings in relief of winner Fergie Jenkins, gained his 16th save to set a Rangers' club record. [The Sporting News]
