John Candelaria pitched a five-hitter, but four unearned runs accounted for the difference when the Pirates defeated the Braves, 5-1. Bob Horner committed three errors, resulting in three tainted tallies. The Pirates' only earned run came in the seventh inning when Omar Moreno homered. An error by Jerry Royster added an unearned run in the same stanza before Horner hit for the circuit in the Braves' half to deprive Candelaria of a shutout. [The Sporting News]
