A single by Steve Ontiveros in the eighth inning drove in the game's lone run and enabled the Cubs to edge the Reds, 1-0. Ken Henderson led off the eighth with a double and Jerry Martin bunted safely. Mike LaCoss, making a rare relief appearance for the Reds, replaced Bonham.

Henderson was thrown out at the plate on a grounder by Larry Biittner before Ontiveros came through with his single to drive in Martin. Mike Krukow was the winner with relief help from Dick Tidrow in the eighth. Bruce Sutter took over the in the ninth and picked up his 22nd save. [The Sporting News]
