After the Padres won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader, 2-1, the Braves captured the second game, 5-2. In the lidlifter, the Braves led, 1-0, going into the bottom of the ninth when Jerry Turner began the Padre rally with a single, advanced to third on a single by Jay Johnstone and scored on an infield hit by Fernando Gonzalez. Pinch-hitter Gene Tenace drew a walk to fill the bases and after pinch-hitter Broderick Perkins fouled out, pinch-hitter Kurt Bevacqua walked on a 3-1 pitch to force home the winning run.

A two-run double by Glenn Hubbard in the sixth inning was the Braves' key blow of the second contest. The score was 1-1 entering the sixth when Gary Matthews and Bob Horner opened with singles. Two outs later, Hubbard punched a double down the right field line. The Braves picked up another tally in the eighth on a double by Bruce Benedict and the final run in the ninth on a throwing error by Padre second baseman Gonzalez. [The Sporting News]
