The largest crowd in the majors this season -- 58,707 -- watched the Braves pummel the Phillies, 10-3, as Phil Niekro stroked two doubles and pitched his eighth complete game of the campaign. The Braves opened a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Jerry Royster singled, Bob Horner reached first on an error by Mike Schmidt, Jeff Burroughs singled, Barry Bonnell walked and Pepe Frias singled.

In the third, Bonnell walked and scored after Biff Pocoroba's double, which was retrieved and thrown wildly by left fielder Greg Luzinski. Frias then doubled home Pocoroba and scored on a single by Mike Lum. Horner connected for a solo homer in the fourth and Lum clouted a two-run round-tripper in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
