A free-swinging game that produced a total of 32 hits saw the Yankees come out winners when Graig Nettles homered with one out in the 10th inning to beat the Royals, 11-10. The Yankees batted their way to a 10-5 lead, scoring six runs in the seventh inning. Rookie pinch-hitter Darryl Jones drove in two runs with a single and Mickey Rivers added a pair with a triple.

The Royals came back with two runs in their half of the seventh and tied the score in the ninth. Steve Braun started the rally with a single and Amos Otis homered. George Brett, who had four hits, singled, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Darrell Porter, moved to third on a wild pitch by Ken Clay and scored the tying tally when Willie Randolph threw wildly after fielding a grounder by Pete LaCock.
