A homer by Mike Ivie with two men on base climaxed a five-run rally in the ninth inning and carried the Giants to a 12-10 victory over the Cardinals, who were stopped on their seven-game winning streak. Keith Hernandez belted a three-run homer for the Cardinals during a six-run outburst in the first inning. Willie McCovey hit the 511th homer of his career for the Giants in the third, tying him with Mel Ott for 11th place on the major leagues' all-time list, after driving in his 1,500th run with a single in the first. Terry Whitfield also homered for the Giants in the third.

Trailing, 9-7, the Giants began their ninth-inning rally with singles by Larry Herndon and Darrell Evans. After a pass to Bill Madlock, two tying runs scored on successive forceouts at second. John Tamargo then walked and Ivie followed with his winning homer. [The Sporting News]
