A four-run outburst in the first inning propelled the Mets to a 9-4 victory over the Braves. The Mets kayoed Mickey Mahler in the first inning as Richie Hebner and John Stearns slashed back-to-back run-scoring singles, Willie Montanez hit a sacrifice fly and Steve Henderson smacked a double. Montanez clouted a two-run homer in the third frame and the Mets added two more runs in the sixth on a passed ball by Braves' catcher Joe Nolan and a single by Stearns. [The Sporting News]
