Kurt Bevacqua's single to left with one out in the ninth inning plated Ozzie Smith with the winning run as the Padres squeezed past the Dodgers, 3-2. Eric Rasmussen permitted only five hits in going the distance to gain his first victory of the season.

The score was tied, 2-2, going into the Padres' ninth when Smith led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After starter-loser Andy Messersmith issued an intentional pass to Gene Richards, Bevacqua stroked his game-winning hit. [The Sporting News]
