A balk call that provoked an argument and resulted in the ejection of manager Tommy Lasorda of the Dodgers proved to be a factor in enabling the Reds to gain a 5-4 victory. With the Dodgers leading, 2-1, the Reds loaded the bases in the third inning on singles by Ken Griffey and Dave Concepcion and a pass to Joe Morgan.

Johnny Bench then singled, driving in two runs. Morgan took third and was waved home when Rick Sutcliffe was called for a balk. The Reds added what proved to be their deciding run in the fifth when Morgan doubled and Dan Driessen singled. [The Sporting News]
