Making his first start since returning to the Dodgers as a free agent, Andy Messersmith allowed only two hits in seven innings and gained a 5-2 victory over the Padres. Messersmith dueled to a 1-1 tie with Eric Rasmussen before the Dodgers broke loose in the seventh.

Bill Russell singled, Reggie Smith walked and Steve Garvey singled to give the Dodgers the lead. Ron Cey then singled to score Smith. Dusty Baker was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Rick Monday iced the decision with a two-run single. [The Sporting News]
