. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Capping a brilliant regular season with his 24th victory, Ron Guidry tossed a four-hitter as the Yankees maintained their one-game lead in the East division by beating the Blue Jays, 3-1. Guidry raised his strikeout total to 243 for a new club record.

The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Lou Piniella singled, went to second when Chris Chambliss was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Roy White. The Blue Jays tied the game in the fifth on an error by Willie Randolph before a Toronto error gave the Yankees their victory in the sixth.

A single by Thurman Munson and a walk to Reggie Jackson sent Jay starter Balor Moore to the showers in favor of Tom Buskey. Piniella grounded out and Graig Nettles was walked intentionally to load the bases. Munson and Jackson scored when first baseman Doug Ault committed a throwing error to home on a grounder by Chambliss. [The Sporting News]
