Reducing their magic number to three for clinching a third straight East division title, the Phillies split a twin bill with the Expos, winning the first game, 5-3, and losing the second game, 3-0. In the opener, consecutive singles by Larry Bowa, Garry Maddox and Greg Luzinski produced a first-inning run and the Phils added a pair in the third on an infield hit by Bowa and a homer by Luzinski. Tim McCarver drove in a run with a single in the sixth and a sacrifice fly by Bob Boone accounted for the final tally in the eighth.

In the nightcap, Tug McGraw made his first start since 1974 but was bested by Rudy May, who hurled a four-hitter.
