Maintaining their four-game lead in the East division, the Phillies outlasted the Expos, 3-2, in 12 innings. The score was 2-2 going into the bottom of the 12th when Orlando Gonzalez beat out an infield hit on which Expo pitcher Stan Bahnsen was ejected for arguing the call at first base.

When Woodie Fryman relieved, Bake McBride laid down a bunt and both runners were safe when third baseman Stan Papi failed to handle the ball. A sacrifice by Bud Harrelson moved the runners along and Larry Bowa ended the contest with a single.
