Capitalizing on loose play by Toronto, the Red Sox outlasted the Blue Jays, 7-6, in a 14-inning marathon to remain one game behind the division-leading Yankees in the East division. The score was 6-6 going into the 14th when Jim Rice opened with a single, went to second on a groundout by Carl Yastrzemski and to third on an infield hit by Carlton Fisk.

After Fred Lynn struck out, Butch Hobson hit a smash to third baseman Roy Howell, who threw wildly past first base as Rice scored. The teams combined for 36 hits, the most in any A.L. game this season. [The Sporting News]
