With manager Herman Franks pulling the right strings, the Cubs rallied for three runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Cardinals, 5-3. Cards' rookie catcher Terry Kennedy, son of the Cubs' vice-president, batted in a run with a single in the seventh to give the Redbirds a 3-2 lead.

Dave Rader opened the ninth by drawing a walk. Mike Sember ran for Rader. Pinch-hitter Scot Thompson singled and Ivan DeJesus was safe on a bunt to load the bases. Mike Vail came up as a pinch-hitter and popped out, but Bill Buckner singled to center, driving in the Cubs' tying and leading runs.
