The Red Sox outlasted the Tigers, 5-4, in 11 innings to remain 2½ games behind the division-leading Yankees in the A. L. East. With the score 4-4, Butch Hobson drew a leadoff walk to begin the Sox' winning rally. Frank Duffy ran for Hobson and reached third on a pinch-single by Jack Brohamer.

John Hiller relieved Steve Baker on the mound for the Tigers and got two outs, including an erasure of Duffy at the plate on a ground ball, but Jerry Remy then lined a single up the middle to drive in the game-winning marker. [The Sporting News]
