George Foster hit his 33rd homer of the season for the Reds to tie the score at 2-2 in the eighth.

Art Gardner, coming in to run for Mike Ivie, took second on a sacrifice and reached third on an infield hit by Rob Andrews. After an intentional pass to John Tamargo loaded the bases, Skip James struck out before Whitfield delivered his single.
