Completing a sweep of the four-game series, the Yankees unloaded an 18-hit attack to beat the Red Sox, 7-4, and move into a first-place tie in the East division. The Yankees scored three runs in the first inning off loser Bobby Sprowl, who walked four of the six batters he faced. Reggie Jackson drove in one run and Graig Nettles hit reliever Bob Stanley's first pitch for a two-run single. An infield hit by Jackson and single by Lou Piniella plated a pair in the second.

The Yankees made the count 6-0 in the fourth on three hits and a sacrifice fly by Piniella. Bucky Dent singled for his third hit of the game to add a run in the seventh.
