Coming out ahead in a pair of pitching duels, the Phillies defeated the Cardinals in a twi-night doubleheader, 1-0 and 2-1, to pull three games ahead of the Pirates in the East division race. Dick Ruthven won a three-hit matchup with Tom Bruno in the opener when the Phillies scored an unearned run in the sixth inning. Garry Maddox led off with a single. When Richie Hebner grounded to Keith Hernandez, the first baseman threw to second in an attempted forceout of Maddox, but Garry Templeton let the ball get away. Maddox took third on the error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bob Boone.

In the nightcap, the Phillies picked up a run in the second on a walk to Mike Schmidt, single by Jerry Martin and safe squeeze bunt by Ted Sizemore. The Cards came back with a homer by Jerry Morales in the sixth for their only run of the night.
