Home runs by Ken Griffey, Johnny Bench and Pete Rose powered the Reds to a 6-2 victory over the Padres. Griffey's clout came in the third inning and followed a single by Paul Moskau and walk to Rose. One out later, Bench hit a bases-empty round-tripper.

Rose's homer was an inside-the-park affair in the fourth inning with Cesar Geronimo on base via a single. Rose's blow carried only about 200 feet in the air but took a high bounce over the head of left fielder Gene Richards and rolled to the wall. [The Sporting News]
