A single by Dave Parker in the 12th inning for his third hit of the game scored Phil Garner and brought the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Braves. Willie Stargell produced the Pirates' first three runs with a homer in the opening frame, but the Braves came back with a two-run smash by Cito Gaston in the fourth and a pinch-homer by Rowland Office in the seventh to tiehe score.

In the Pirates' 12th, Garner singled and advanced to third on a passed ball and a sacrifice by Steve Brye. The Braves then passed both Frank Taveras and Omar Moreno intentionally to load the bases, hoping to set up a double play, even though the next batter was Parker. The move backfired when the N.
