Led by Bill Buckner, who drove in four runs with a homer and two doubles, the Cubs outlasted the Astros, 14-11, in a slugfest marked by a total of 31 hits. The Cubs' 16-hit attack also included homers by Bobby Murcer, Manny Trillo and Dave Rader.

Bruce Bochy produced the Astros' only homer among their 15 hits. Buckner's homer after a pass to Rodney Scott sent the Cubs ahead, 11-9, in the sixth and they added what proved to be the deciding run in the seventh on a double by Ivan DeJesus, a sacrifice, and a single by Jerry White.
