Rallying for two runs in the ninth inning, the Dodgers defeated the Phillies, 6-5, in a game that brought Don Sutton and Steve Garvey together in the lineup for the first time since their clubhouse brawl August 20. Garvey drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and homered with a man on base in the fifth. Rick Monday also homered for the Dodgers. Bake McBride and Bob Boone rapped round-trippers for the Phillies. McBride also had a triple and drove in three runs. Sutton left after eight innings and Lance Rautzhan was the winner.

The Dodgers opened their rally with a single by Reggie Smith. After Garvey flied out, Ron Cey was hit by a pitch. Dusty Baker singled, scoring Smith. Ted Martinez, running for Cey, stopped at second.
