Reggie Jackson boosted his career RBI total to 1,001 with a grand-slam homer as the Yankees trounced the A's, 7-1. Mickey Rivers hit two solo shots. With the score tied, 1-1, Willie Randolph opened the Yankee sixth with a single and both Lou Piniella and Graig Nettles walked to set the stage for Jackson's second slam of the season and seventh of his career.
