In the third inning, Jerry Mumphrey drew a leadoff walk, stole second and went to third on an infield out. After Ted Simmons was intentionally walked, Keith Hernandez doubled home Mumphrey. An intentional walk to Ken Reitz loaded the bases and set the stage for Phillips' two-run single.
