Held to three hits by Jim Colborn, the Yankees lost to the Mariners, 4-1. Chris Chambliss homered for the Yankees' run in the second inning, but Bruce Bochte matched it with a circuit clout in the Mariners' half.

The M's then went ahead in the fourth when Leon Roberts singled and Leroy Stanton doubled. Singles by Julio Cruz and Ruppert Jones around an infield out added a run in the fifth. Roberts doubled and Bob Robertson singled to close out the scoring in the eighth. Colborn ended Mickey Rivers' 17-game batting streak, holding the Yankee outfielder hitless in four trips.
