Continuing their see-saw struggle, the Giants climbed back into sole possession of first place in the N. L. West by outlasting the Dodgers, 7-6, in a wild 11-inning contest. The game was 4-4 going into the top of the 10th when the Giants went ahead, 6-4, on a two-out, two-run pinch-single by Marc Hill. The Dodgers tied it in the bottom of the frame on a double play grounder by Joe Ferguson and bad-hop single by pinch-hitter Davey Lopes.

In the top of the 11th, Larry Herndon opened with a two-bagger and scored on a single by Jack Clark. Ed Halicki relieved in the bottom of the inning with two men on base and one out to retire the last two batters and record the first save of his career. [The Sporting News]
