A double by Chris Chambliss scored Randolph. A walk to Graig Nettles loaded the bases and Reggie Jackson was hit by a pitch, forcing in the tying run.

Bill Castro replaced Bob McClure on the mound. Lou Piniella laid down an attempted squeeze bunt that was fielded by catcher Buck Martinez. In attempting to step on the plate for a forceout, Martinez dropped the ball, allowing Chambliss to score the winning run. [The Sporting News]
