A five-run explosion in the fourth inning carried the Cubs to a 5-4 triumph over the Pirates. Trailing, 3-0, the Cubs loaded the bases on singles by Mike Vail and Manny Trillo and a walk to Davey Johnson. Starter Jerry Reuss then committed a balk, allowing Vail to score. After Tim Blackwell walked to reload the sacks, Ed Whitson replaced Reuss.

A grounder by Larry Biittner scored Trillo, and Ivan DeJesus walked to again fill the sacks. Rodney Scott walked to force in a run and Bill Buckner then lined a single off the glove of shortstop Frank Taveras to send home two tallies. [The Sporting News]
