Consecutive singles by Ken Reitz and Jerry Morales plated Freed. Pinch-hitter Steve Swisher slapped a one-out single that drove in Reitz and sent starter Randy Lerch to the showers. Garry Templeton greeted reliever Tug McGraw with a single to send home Morales. Ken Oberkfell, the pinch-runner for Swisher, and Templeton scored on a double by George Hendrick.
