A throwing error by shortstop Ozzie Smith opened the door for three runs as the Reds downed the Padres, 3-1. The Reds trailed, 1-0, going into the bottom of the seventh when Vic Correll stroked a one-out single. Pinch-hitter Dave Concepcion then hit a routine grounder to Smith, who threw the ball into right field, allowing Correll to score. Concepcion went to third on the play and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter JOhnny Bench. A double by Pete Rose and single by Junior Kennedy gave the Reds their final run. [The Sporting News]
