. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Getting tight pitching from Dick Ruthven and Steve Carlton, the Phillies swept a doubleheader from the Pirates, 3-2 and 5-0. In the opener, Ruthven won his fourth straight and his seventh since joining the Phillies in June. The Phils scored their initial run for Ruthven in the first inning on singles by Mike Schmidt, Greg Luzinski and Richie Hebner. Larry Bowa then supplied the deciding blow in the fourth, hitting a single that drove in two runs following a single by Ted Sizemore and double by Bake McBride.

In the second game, Carlton tossed a three-hitter. The Phillies began scoring in their first turn at bat when McBride singled, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Luzinski. Singles by Tim McCarver and Carlton, a wild pitch by loser Jim Bibby and double by McBride made it 4-0 in the second. [The Sporting News]
