Homers by Gary Carter and Andre Dawson lifted the Expos to a 2-1 triumph in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Cubs came from behind in the second game to win, 4-3. Carter's blast led off the third inning and Dawson's clout came in the sixth. The Cubs got their run in the ninth and just missed tying the game. A single by Bobby Murcer and double by Greg Gross put runners at second and third with one out. A single by Manny Trillo scored Murcer, but Gross was thrown out at the plate by right fielder Ellis Valentine.

The Cubs trailed in the nightcap, 2-1, going into the bottom of the eighth when Larry Biittner opened with a single. Jerry White drew a base on balls and, after an out, a double by Gross plated Biittner. Trillo drew an intentional walk and Darold Knowles replaced Mike Garman on the mound for the Expos. Mike Vail followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Cubs ahead, 3-2, and pinch-hitter Ed Putman singled home Gross with what proved to be the winning run. [The Sporting News]
