Although three of their runners were thrown out at home trying to score, the Cubs were able to defeat the Expos, 6-4. The Expos jumped ahead with three runs in the third, but the Cubs came right back with a matching trio in their half on a double by Mike Vail, homer by Dave Kingman and singles by Ed Putman, Rick Reuschel and Ivan DeJesus.

After the Expos regained the lead with a run in the seventh, the Cubs rallied again. Greg Gross singled to open the home half and Larry Biittner was safe on an error by Dave Cash. After DeJesus sacrified, Bobby Murcer laid down a safe bunt to tie the score and Bill Buckner followed with a single to send the Cubs ahead.
