Pressed into service as a starter, Al Fitzmorris gained his first victory in nearly one year when the Angels routed the Twins, 12-3. Dave Frost, who was scheduled to start, had to be scratched because of back problems. Fitzmorris last was a winner on August 24, 1977, when the righthander was with the Indians and beat his present Angel teammates.

The Angels, who piled up 16 hits, broke the game wide open by sending 13 men to bat and scoring seven runs in the third inning. Brian Downing drove in two runs with a double and Joe Rudi accounted for two with a double and bases-loaded walk. [The Sporting News]
