With last-out help from Randy Moffitt, Vida Blue became the first 16-game winner of the season when the Giants defeated the Dodgers, 2-1. Blue allowed only two hits, including a homer by Ron Cey in the fifth inning. When Reggie Smith doubled for the other hit with two away in the ninth, Moffitt took over and retired Cey.

The Giants' first run off Doug Rau in the second inning was unearned when Larry Herndon tripled and continued home on an error by Smith in right field. After Cey tied the score in the fifth, Bill Madlock provided the Giants' winning run, hitting for the circuit in the home half of the fifth. [The Sporting News]
