. . . where the 1970s live forever!

Snapping out of their slump, the Red Sox not only won the completion of the previous night's suspended game, 7-5, by scoring two runs in the 17th inning, but then proceeded to beat the Yankees in the regularly-scheduled contest that followed, 8-1. The August 2 game was halted after 14 innings with the score tied, 5-5. The Yankees once held a 5-0 lead before the Red Sox rallied to pull even. Two of their runs came on passes with the bases loaded and the tying tally counted in the eighth on a double by Jim Rice, a wild pitch by Rich Gossage and a sacrifice fly by Carl Yastrzemski. In the 17th, Dwight Evans, Butch Hobson, Rick Burleson and Rice hit singles to provide the Red Sox with their winning pair.

Playing the regularly-scheduled game, Rice homered with a man on base in the fifth inning, and Fred Lynn connected with a man aboard in the third -- his first homer ever in Yankee Stadium. [The Sporting News]
