After Ken Reitz put the Cards ahead, 1-0, in the top of the third with a homer, the Cubs erupted in their half of the frame. Ivan DeJesus walked, stole second, advanced to third on a safe bunt by Rodney Scott and scored on a single by Bill Buckner. A sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer plated Scott.
