A two-run rally in the seventh inning lifted the Cubs to a 5-4 victory over the Padres. The score was tied, 3-3, going into the seventh when Jerry White opened with a single. Bill Buckner then sliced a drive to left which Gene Richards lost in the lights. The ball sailed over the outfielder's shoulder for an RBI double that put the Cubs ahead, 4-3. Two outs later, Buckner scored on a single by Manny Trillo.

The Padres had rallied to manufacture a tie in the sixth stanza on a sacrifice fly by Tucker Ashford, single by pinch-hitter Oscar Gamble and infield single by Ozzie Smith. [The Sporting News]
