In the first game, the score was 2-2 going into the top of the 11th inning when Carney Lansford led off with a two-base hit. He was wild-pitched to third by Kip Young, who was making his major league debut, and scored when Lyman Bostock drilled a hit off second baseman Steve Dillard's glove. A walk to Joe Rudi moved Bostock to second and he scored on a single by Brian Downing.
